Residents of Bougsemtenga in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, are opening their courtyards to theater productions for the international Récréâtrales festival. The neighborhood has helped produce the event since its creation and is hosting performances during its 14th edition, running from October 24 to 31.

The festival combines street performances with productions in family courtyards. Its alleyway has become an urban stage measuring 550 meters, created by a team of 68 artists and technicians representing 12 countries. The program also offers readings, discussions, music evenings and shows for younger audiences.

Choreographer Djibril Ouattara has worked with neighborhood women and young people since February to develop the opening performance, Les Mouches. It examines humanity through the capacity to respond, care for others and allow space for beauty. Ouattara said his approach involved building on participants’ own dance traditions rather than imposing his knowledge.

Agathe Serré, an amateur actress and member of the Bougsemtenga Women’s Association, has performed at Récréâtrales since 2006. She said older participants initially doubted whether they could meet the physical demands of Ouattara’s rehearsals, but completed the production and would welcome another opportunity.

Professional actor Claude Ilboudo, known as Gohou, participated in festival performances as a child. He said Récréâtrales gives many young people roles in dance, theater and technical production, alongside opportunities to volunteer.
