Representatives of 48 African countries have confirmed they will participate in the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow on October 28 and 29, according to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov. Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend.

Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye, the current African Union chair, is also due to attend. He and Putin are expected to serve as co-chairs of the summit.

The gathering forms part of Moscow’s efforts to build closer political and economic relationships with African nations. Discussions are expected to emphasize cooperation and interests shared by Russia and its African partners.

A separate gathering in Moscow on October 27 will be the eighth summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. Major gas-producing countries will discuss changes in global energy markets and consider ways to expand cooperation among some of the largest fuel producers.
