Your Next Lawyer Probably Won't Work At A Law Firm, My Inhouse Lawyer Client Survey Suggests

Oct 5, 2026

Businesses are increasingly turning to fractional lawyering as a mainstream alternative to traditional law firms, and client data from My Inhouse Lawyer suggests why.

London, United Kingdom, October 5, 2026 -- For decades, businesses needing legal support have essentially faced two choices: hire a lawyer or instruct a law firm.

That binary is beginning to break down.

A growing number of businesses are turning instead to fractional lawyering. This gives them access to experienced legal capability on an ongoing but flexible basis, without committing to the cost of a full-time or part-time in-house hire or the expense of traditional law firms.

But fractional lawyering is not a single model. The term now covers everything from junior and senior professionals working freelance to larger platforms. Experience, qualifications, continuity and breadth of support can vary considerably.

My Inhouse Lawyer has taken the model further, developing what it describes as a next-generation, team-based approach. One highly experienced fractional in-house lawyer sits at the centre of the client relationship, backed by a wider team of senior General Counsel and Specialists.

The model is built around placing an experienced lawyer close enough to the business to understand its people, priorities and commercial context, while giving clients access to specialist expertise as the need arises.

That proximity is central to the approach. A lawyer who knows the business can contribute while decisions are being formed, spot issues earlier and advise through the lens of the organisation they understand, providing continuity rather than treating each issue as a separate legal instruction. The in-house lawyers at My Inhouse Lawyer bring a business perspective shaped by years spent inside companies and commercial environments, not just in law firms.

The model aims to combine the quality, breadth and scalability of a law firm with the embedded understanding of an in-house lawyer, while reducing the trade-offs businesses have typically faced in cost, continuity or reliance on a single person.

My Inhouse Lawyer also uses AI to make routine legal work more efficient, while its experienced lawyers do what AI can't: bring real-world judgment, commercial perspective and an understanding of the people and business behind the decision.

Findings from My Inhouse Lawyer's 2025 Purpose Survey of 750 clients suggest why the approach is resonating. Every respondent preferred its approach to traditional law firms on each of the measures tested, from continuity and commercial mindset to implementing solutions rather than only advising. All said it was more responsive and better value for money than traditional firms. All said it had changed their experience of the legal profession for the better, and all said they would recommend it to other business leaders.

The findings do not suggest that law firms or employed in-house lawyers will disappear. Different models will remain right for different circumstances.

But the balance is beginning to shift. Fractional lawyering is becoming more established, and AI offers the potential to reduce the cost and time of routine legal work. As a result, businesses now have more compelling alternatives to longstanding traditional options.

Twiggy Harding, co-founder of My Inhouse Lawyer, said:

"For years, businesses have had to fit themselves around the way legal services are delivered. Our next-generation fractional lawyering model turns that around. It gives businesses senior legal capability that can flex around them - close enough to understand the business, broad enough to scale, and without the commitment of building everything in-house before a business is ready to do so."
