A member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in congenital cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). The ABTS is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.
Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. A pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon treats infants, children and teens with serious heart or lung conditions that require surgical procedures. These surgeons have specialized training in providing medical care for children who may be born with congenital disorders or develop problems as they become older.
Beyond Texas, Dr. Kupferschmid is making an impact for children around the world. He travels abroad regularly to perform operations. When his friend and fellow pediatric cardiologist Kirk Milhoan, M.D., started an organization called For Hearts and Souls, he quickly became involved.
Through the organization, Dr. Kupferschmid participates in programs in Mongolia, Kosovo, and Iraq. He travels abroad a couple times a year as part of a team that performs operations, while training surgeons in these regions.
